The
department and its members provide a host of services to the community
which we serve.
Structural Fire Fighting
The department responds to all structure fires and fire alarm
activations. On structure fires the department receives mutual aid from
neighboring departments.
Traffic Accidents
The department primary responsibility at traffic accidents is fire
suppression and traffic control. Medical, rescue and search operations
in the district are handled by the Glenville Cashiers Rescue Squad.
The department responds with the North Carolina Department of Forestry
to wildland fires. The department is trained to fight wildfires, but our
primary responsibility at wildfires is the protection of structures.
Natural Disasters
The department responds to natural disasters. The area is affected by
wind storms, ice storms, flooding and
hurricanes and has in the past suffered significant
damage as a result of a storm. Both during and after a storm the department has spent many hours or
several days responding to reports
of damaged and downed power
lines, clearing road, checking on residence and
responding to fire alarms.
The Cashiers Glenville Fire Department has firefighters trained as child
passenger safety seat technicians who can assist you with installation.
Parents and caregiver are welcome to stop by the Station 1 at 579 Frank
Allen Road to get assistance with the installation of thier child's
passanger safety seat. Please keep in mind that firefighters may be out
on a emergency call.
Training
Training is ongoing. Department members train on a regular basis in
order to improve existing skills and learn new ones.
Fire Prevention and
Education
The department is active in fire prevention and education. During national fire prevention week members
visit the district schools to talk about fire prevention and safety .
Testing
To ensure their satisfactory condition and proper operation, department
equipment and other resources are inspected and tested. The department’s
pumpers are pump tested annually to confirm that they meet or exceed
rated capacity and that they can maintain that capacity for a prolonged
period. Fire hose is tested under high pressure for leaks. Pressurized
hydrants are inspected for condition, ease of access, ease of operation
and capacity (GPM flow). Dry hydrants are inspected for ease of access
and condition of piping. A pumper then drafts from the hydrant for a
prolonged period to test the hydrant’s capacity (GPM flow).
Preplanning
The department surveys commercial structures to develop fire preplans.
We examine structures for type of construction, size, number of stories
and potential hazards to personnel or hazardous materials. The needed
fire flow, water flow needed to fight a potential fire, is calculated.
The department is rated by the North Carolina Office of State Fire
Marshal. The departments works thoughout the year to maintain and
improve its rating with the NC OSFM. This effort takes the form of
building new stations, the purchase and maintenance of equipment,
training of personel, testing and inspection of equipment and resources,
aand the preplaining of commercial structures.
Our mission is to protect the lives of the people we serve by preventing the occurrence and minimizing the adverse effects of fires, accidents, natural disasters, and other emergencies
