How to React to an
Approaching Emergency Vehicle
If you see an oncoming emergency
vehicle you should pull to the right, stop, and wait for them to pass.
We know that it is not always that simple so below are some guidelines
of what to do if you see an emergency vehicle approaching.

Stay Alert!

Calmly, check your mirrors, use your turn signal, pull to the right
and stop. Do not slam on your breaks.

Do not stop in an area where an emergency vehicle cannot safely pass
such as in a curve or hill on a two lane road. Make sure to give
them enough room to safely pass in an area where they have a direct
line of sight with oncoming traffic.

Look for and be prepared for multiple emergency vehicles.

Never follow or pass an emergency vehicle that has its emergency
lights and siren on.
For Stopped

Move Over and Slow Down

North Carolina's Move Over law requires motorists slow down and
approach cautiously when an emergency vehicle is stopped on the
shoulder of the roadway with its lights flashing. Motorists are
required, if they can safely do so, to move over to another lane
away from the emergency vehicle on a multi-lane highway or slow
down on a two lane highway. Motorists must slow down while
maintaining a safe speed.

At an Accident
Scene

Slow down, be alert and look for emergency responders who may be
working the accident and providing traffic control.
Remember when you see an emergency vehicle that they are responding to
an emergency. It could be a family member or a friend that they
are responding to help. Failure to yield right of way delays their
response and is also breaking the law.
Child Passenger Safety Seats
The Cashiers Glenville Fire Department has firefighters trained as child passenger safety seat technicians who can assist you with installation. Parents and caregiver are welcome to stop by the Station 1 at 579 Frank Allen Road to get assistance with the installation of thier child's passanger safety seat. Please keep in mind that firefighters may be out on a emergency call.
