Q: Burning
Brush
A: The burning of brush is permitted in most area
of North Carolina provide a burning band is not in effect, a burn permit
is required to burn brush. The North Carolina Division of Forest
Resources issues burn permits online. Burn permits
may also available at Zollers
Hardware and other locations. Keep in mind that burning within 100 feet
of an occupied dwelling is regulated by county authority, not the NCDFR.
There are restrictions on what, where and when brush can be burned.
The NCDFR website lists these restrictions.
Q: Response
Time
A: The response time to
a specific location can vary
depending on road conditions, weather, time of day and
traffic. The Cashiers Glenville Volunteer Fire Department has six stations.
Multiple stations reduce the departments response time and can lead to
lower insurance cost for residents, (insurance rate are determined in
part by the proximity of a property to a fire station).
Q: Distance from a station to
your house
A: The approximate distance from one on the departments stations to a
property can be obtained from one of the many online map programs such
as MapQuest, Google Maps, etc. The address of the fire stations and
their coordinates are listed on the about page. The programs don’t work
for all addresses and occasionally miss-locate an address giving a false
result.
Q: Is there a fire hydrant
located within 1000 feet of my house
A: Not all of the Cashiers Glenville fire district is covered by
hydrants. The developments of Sapphire Valley, Lonesome Valley,
Highlands Cove, Mountain Top, Wade Hampton and High Hampton have hydrant
systems that cover most of those developments.
Q: Alternative water supplies
A:In areas not covered by hydrants the department has the capability to
draft water from a lake, pond, stream or other water source and
transport it to where it is needed. There are numerous water sources in
the district with a sufficient volume of water from which the department
can obtain water to fight a
structure fire.
Q: Property Protection Class
A: Vist
this wecb site's Distric/Rating page for information of the
property protecton class. Note: The fire department's rating was
uptained using creditable alternative water supplies therefore hydrant
distance requirements do not effect the rating.
Q: Locating a property
A: Jackson
County maintains a website that allows you to located a parcel based on
the parcel address, PIN, owner name, etc. Go to
(www.jacksonnc.org) then click on Property Map Viewer. The site has
information on the responding department and milage zone for listed

Communications
Calls for assistance come into the Jackson County Communication Center,
an enhanced 911 system. The Jackson County Communications Center
dispatches the department by radio, members receive calls by radio pager
and or text message.
Mutual Aid
The department has mutual aid agreements with neighboring departments. The
Highlands, Cullowhee, and Lake Toxaway Fire Departments are the primary
mutual aid departments. Automatic mutual aid is received on structure
fires; on residential fires two departments are automatically dispatched
and on commercial fires three. Additional departments are available if needed.
Mutual aid departments bring additional man power, equipment, and water.
Hydrants
The Cashiers Glenville area is unincorporated therefore there are no
city services in the area. There are a few private firms that provide
water and sewer services, but only to a limited area. Many developments
and some neighborhood associations have water systems and several also
provide sewer service. The developments of Sapphire Valley,
Lonesome Valley, Highlands Cove, Mountain Top, Wade Hampton and High
Hampton have hydrant systems that cover most of those developments.
In areas not covered by hydrants the department has the capability to
draft water from nearby water sources and transport it to where it is
needed.
